Korobosea is a residential suburb in Port Moresby, situated between East Boroko, Kirakira Village, and the Two Mile Hill area. It benefits from its proximity to important health facilities, including Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and Pacific International Hospital (PIH).

Originally, many properties in Korobosea were government-owned medium to high-cost covenant housing. These homes were later sold to tenants, mainly public servants, or transitioned to private ownership through various government schemes.

Korobosea International School, a private institution under the International Education Agency (IEA), provides quality education for grades 3 to 6. Its primary school, Boroko International School, is situated in Boroko and serves early learning through grade 2.

Korobosea is well-connected to East Boroko, Boroko’s commercial area, and Port Moresby’s CBD via a privately-run public transport system that travels through Two Mile Hill.

Key Information

The suburb is named after Korobosea, a large village historically inhabited by the Motu-Koitabu people, the traditional landowners of Port Moresby. Situated on a hill overlooking Joyce Bay and Walter Bay, Korobosea was the first village established by this indigenous population.

Over time, some villagers moved from Korobosea to settle at the foot of the hill, forming what is now known as Kirakira. Mahuru village, located between Korobosea and Kirakira, emerged as an offshoot of Kirakira village.

Today, the descendants of the original settlers of Korobosea continue to reside at the site of the old village, with a growing population exceeding 1,000 residents.

Residential

An increasing number of homeowners, who previously resided in government-owned medium to high-cost covenant housing, have reinvested in their properties and are now offering them for rent.

Korobosea’s close proximity to Port Moresby’s two major healthcare providers, along with its accessibility to the Boroko commercial district, makes it an attractive residential option for working-class Papua New Guineans seeking rental accommodations.

Schools

Korobosea is home to Korobosea International School, which is operated by the International Education Agency (IEA). Other schools nearby include Port Moresby Grammar School, Port Moresby International School (POMIS), Kilakila Secondary School (near Kirakira village), and Ted Diro Primary School, located at Murray Barracks.

Healthcare

In addition to the services provided by the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and Pacific International Hospital (PIH), Korobosea residents have access to several other healthcare facilities. These include Paradise Private Hospital, 2K Medical Centre and the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) School of Medicine and Health Sciences dental clinic.

The UPNG School of Medicine and Health Sciences, located adjacent to PMGH, plays a vital role in training the country’s future doctors.
